Joslyn Hobbis

WSA Tutor: Joslyn Hobbis

Joslyn Hobbis

In her playful painting practice, Joslyn Hobbis is interested in working beyond the confines of what is usually considered the standard rectangle: experimenting with gestural movements of the body vs layered repetitive mechanical painted marks; erasing, and pitting the layers against each other.  Her artwork activates the senses with splatter, smear, smudge, stroke, drip, crack and fissure, while the biomorphic shape breaks free of the traditional square frame. Cast-off materials create curious objects to explore via holes and protrusions, gateways and portals, but they also make commentary on consumerism, and postmodern ideals of breaking down barriers between low and high cultural values through play.

Hobbis studied in the UK at the University for the Creative Arts in the UK, and Wintec Te Pūkenga in Kirikiriroa Hamilton.  She has exhibited in London, UK and also in NZ.  During her time at Wintec, she interned at Ramp Gallery and was awarded the WSA Graduate Exhibition Award.  She currently holds a Master of Contemporary Art.
