2024 NZ Painting and Printmaking Award

Tēnā tātou katoa, He uri ahau o Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu rāua ko Ngāti Kauwhata. Ngā maunga ko Emiemi me Ruahine Ko Oroua me Waikare ngā awa Ko Kura Te Waru-Rewiri ahau. I am currently an Associate Head of School of Art, Te Whiti o Rehua, in the College of Creative Arts Te Rau Wharangi, Te Kunenga Ki Purehuroa Massey University. I head the Maori Visual Arts Programme Toioho ki Āpiti which is based on the Palmerston North Massey University campus. I am one of five Māori Arts Director on the Board of Toi Ngapuhi https://www.toingapuhi.co.nz As a contemporary Wahine Maori artist since 1985 Kura’s works are represented in public and private collections at home and abroad. Kura project led the refurbishment of the North Tec marae whare Te Puna o te Mātauranga which opened in 2015 Dec 5^th. One of a few Wahine Maori given the responsibility to do the work in Te Ao Maori. Kura acknowledges those who worked alongside of her, Tai Tokerau master carver, Te Warihi Hetaraka, created the carvings on the front face of the building. NorthTec carving tutor, James Te Kuiti Stewart, along with NorthTec Maori Arts students, Michael Cameron and Kawiti Wiremu, and former Applied Arts student, Akara Maihi, contributed the carvings inside the whare hui. A large team of weavers, led by NorthTec weaving tutor, Te Hemoata Henare, worked hard to creating the contemporary tukutuku for the end walls. Invited painters Andrea Hopkins and Nigel Borell NZMN painted the heke inside the whare and in the ceiling of the mahau. Kura one of the last ministerial appointments to the CREANZ Maori Arts Board Te Waka Toi 2008 to April 2014. Then CREANZ returned to unitary governance. Kura was inducted into the CoCA Hall of Fame in 2016 and the following year she was appointed as Associate Professor of Māori Visual Arts, Toioho ki Āpiti, School of Art, College of Creative Arts Massey University. In 2019 she was awarded as the first Wahine Maori the Te Waka Toi the Te Papa o Tongarewa Rongomaraeroa Award. Kura is the chair of her marae, Mangaiti Marae Trustees, a Board Rep for her marae on Te Runanga o Whaingaroa. Kura has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions. She has been involved in numerous projects and more recently with the Te Waka Kotahi designs for the Kaeo roundabout and 90metre long wall to support the new two lane bridge at the junction of Kaeo to Whangaroa bridge to the north which open in November 2023. Kura Irirangi Te Waru-Rewiri.   Christchurch artist Marian Maguire is best known for her lithographs and etchings which investigate New Zealand colonial history and Greek mythology. She graduated from the Ilam School of Art, University of Canterbury in 1984 and in 1986 studied at the Tamarind Institute of Lithography, Albuquerque, USA. She has exhibited regularly throughout Aotearoa since 1984 and her work has received international recognition. Aside from her own artistic practice she ran Limeworks Lithography Studio (1986–94) and PaperGraphica Print Studio  (1996–2016) and in her capacity as Master Printer she collaborated with some of New Zealand’s best known artists. Currently, as well as making her own prints and paintings, she directs PG gallery192 in Christchurch. Marian Maguire’s work is held in numerous public collections including: Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa; Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tamaki; Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetu; The Waikato Museum, Te Whare Taonga o Waikato; National Gallery of Australia; Cambridge University, UK; The Birthplace of Captain Cook Museum, Middlesborough, UK; National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the British Museum, UK.
